I nodded. I did not need the plan repeated to me. We had been through it enough times already.

I was ready. I licked my lips.

Greta strolled into the sitting room, and Percy, Grandpa Woebegone and I drifted in behind her. She planted herself on the sofa and pretended to read a comic.

‘Darling,’ Greta’s father said to his wife who was busy performing a downward dog. ‘Can you think of a rhyme for “chilly”?’

‘Hmm?’ Greta’s mother murmured.

‘Listen. I have:

There was a young man from Caerphilly

Whose hands were incredibly chilly.

To unfreeze them perchance

He stuck his hands down his pants,

But instead felt a little …’

‘Silly?’

‘“Silly!” Perfect, darling!’

‘Now please don’t interrupt me again,’ Prosecca said. ‘I’m feeling very trance-like,’ she added, sitting with her legs twisted like spaghetti and beginning to chant. ‘Ommmmmmmmm … Ommmmmm …’

Greta looked at me and mouthed: Now!

I closed my eyes and breathed in. I could feel the air vibrating around me. I could feel the power coursing through me.

I lifted my arms and the pictures on the walls began to rattle slightly.

It was happening.

‘Look at the pictures!’ Greta shouted, letting out a loud gasp and pointing at the wall.

‘Shh!’ said her mother. ‘Mummy is channelling her chakras.’
